Scope note
Islamic writing boards used in Qur'anic schools upon which pupils write verses from the Qur'an as a means of rote learning. Also used as devotional objects, and by diviners in magical practices involving inscriptions and symbols written upon the boards, both Qur'anic and from other sources. Typically they have crescents carved at the top.
